緻密なアレンジと構築の美学

「Catch me If you can」を借りてきて見た。いやー、あのタイトルシーケンスはやっぱすごいわ。って10万回くらいいろんなトコで言われてるんだろうけど、映画の冒頭からこんなに引き込まれたのって初めて。息を呑むってこういうこと?なんかそれだけで独立した作品の本編を見てるような気になってて、本編が始まってから「あ、こっちが本番か」と気が付く感じ。

で、この映像がすごいのはホントそうなんだけど、これ音楽も最高。というか音楽がこれじゃなかったらここまですごくないと思った。「これじゃなかったら」とかいう仮定を持ち出しても意味ないんだけど、とにかく音楽が全編に渡ってすばらしかった。

時代設定が少し昔なので音楽もそれっぽい雰囲気を出してるんだけど、実は雰囲気がそれっぽいだけで内容としてはとても現代的だと思う。Jazzっぽいんだけどもストリングスとかも入ってて、ビッグバンドなんだかフルオケなんだかわからない、ってアンサンブルは映画音楽では割とあるような気がするけど、逆にいうと映画音楽くらいでしか聴くことがない。

この映画の音楽のように練りに練った緻密なアレンジを高度な演奏でバッチリきめる、っていうのが最近個人的に流行ってて、となるとやはりビッグバンド物かなあ、ということで何枚か買ってみたりした。とはいえ何も昔の有名なバンドを聴きたいのではない。音楽に懐古趣味を持ち込むのは嫌いなので、なるべく最新のものがいいし、録音だって綺麗な方がいい。

というわけで最近こればっかり聴いてるのがRandy Waldmanの「UnReel」という作品。これはまさに現代的なビッグバンドで、奇しくもいろんな映画(サウンドオブミュージックからインディ・ジョーンズまで)のテーマ曲を集めた作品になっている。もちろんそのままやってるわけではなく、これでもかというほど凝ったアレンジがされていてそれを気持ちいいくらいタイトな演奏で聴かせてくれる。それもそのはず、ドラムにヴィニー・カリウタ、ベースにジョン・パティトゥッチというリズムセクション。いやあもうほんとすごいわ。特にヴィニー。才気走ってるというか、とにかくすんげー。そろそろ「変態」じゃなくて「天才」って呼んであげてもいいかもしれない。

昔は大きい編成のアンサンブルって好きじゃなくて、なるべくトリオとかの小編成によるインタープレイの応酬、って感じのほうを好んでた。でも最近大規模で緻密なアンサンブルによる「構築の美学」みたいな物も好きになってきた。多分「構築の美学」に気付き始めたのはSteely Danを聴き始めた頃だと思うんだけど。
